Accidents at work

In Ireland there are strict laws and regulations for employers to protect employees, contractors and visitors from accidents and injuries in the workplace. By law the workplace must have a minimum Health and Safety standard to prevent accidents.

Employers must provide employees with a safe environment which includes providing proper machinery and tools; ensuring that machines and tools are maintained, a safe system of work and a safe building in which to work.

The workplace should be kept tidy and suitable work stations should be provided with proper equipment including chairs. Floors and corridors should be kept clean and free from hazards. Employees should be given proper training; for example if you lift heavy objects you should receive training to show you how to do this safely.

Safety materials and equipment should be provided if required such as googles, hard hats, masks, safety gloves and high visibility jackets.

Accidents do occur in every workplace including factories, building sites and offices.

By law an employer must reduce the risk of accidents at work by taking reasonable steps to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees. So if you are injured at work then your employer may be obliged to compensate you for the injury and expenses you incur.

If you suffer an accident at work and you are not at fault then you should be entitled to receive compensation for your pain and suffering. Therefore it is important that you contact us for advice on whether or not you may have a claim against your employer.

We will contact your employer and/or your employer’s insurance company. Usually the employer’s insurance company deal directly with us concerning the claim.

Compensation may include damages for the personal injury being pain and suffering, loss of income, medical expenses and general expenses arising from the accident.

It is important to give us all of the information so that we can ascertain where the fault lies and whether or not you can take a claim. If you have been involved in an accident at work and suffered an injury in the past two years and you would like to find out if you are entitled to make a claim for compensation please contact us by filling out our online enquiry form or telephone us on our free phone number 1800 343404.

Irish solicitors may not calculate fees or other charges in contentious business as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement nor is it our practice to do so.
